چکیده

The cohesive energy of condensed matter in strong magnetic fields is a fundamental quantity characterizing magnetized neutron star surfaces. The cohesive energy refers to the energy required to pull an atom out of the bulk condensed matter at zero pressure. Theoretical models of pulsar and magnetar magnetospheres depend on the cohesive properties of the surface matter in strong magnetic fields. For example, depending on the cohesive energy of the surface matter, an acceleration zone (“polar gap”) above the polar cap of a pulsar may or may not form. Also, condensation of the neutron star surface, if it occurs, can significantly affect thermal emission from isolated neutron stars. We describe our calculations of the cohesive property of matter in strong magnetic fields, and discuss the implications of our results to the recent observations of neutron star surface emission as well as to the detection/non-detection of radio emission from magnetars.

Condensed Surfaces of Magnetic Neutron Stars, Thermal Surface Emission, and Particle Acceleration Above Pulsar Polar Caps

Recent calculations indicate that the cohesive energy of condensed matter increases with magnetic field strength and becomes very significant at magnetar-like fields (e.g., 10 keV at 3 × 10 G for zero-pressure condensed iron). This implies that for sufficiently strong magnetic fields and/or low temperatures, the neutron star surface may be in a condensed state with little gas or plasma above it...

Polarized X-rays from Magnetized Neutron Stars

We review the polarization properties of X-ray emission from highly magnetized neutron stars, focusing on emission from the stellar surfaces. We discuss how x-ray polarization can be used to constrain neutron star magnetic field and emission geometry, and to probe strong-field quantum electrodynamics and possibly constrain the properties of axions.

Accretion torque on magnetized neutron stars

The conventional picture of disk accretion onto magnetized neutron stars has been challenged by the spin changes observed in a few X-ray pulsars, and by theoretical results from numerical simulations of diskmagnetized star interactions. These indicate possible accretion during the propeller regime and the spin-down torque increasing with the accretion rate. Here we present a model for the accre...

Pauli Paramagnetism of Neutron Star Matter and the Upper Limit for Neutron Star Magnetic Fields

A relativistic version of Pauli paramagnetism for n − p − e system inside a strongly magnetized neutron star has been developed. An analytical expressions for the saturation value of magnetic field strength for each of these constituents at which they are completely polarized have been obtained. From the fully polarized configuration of electronic component, an upper limit for neutron star magn...

Hydrogen Phases on the Surface of a Strongly Magnetized Neutron Star

The outermost layers of some neutron stars are likely to be dominated by hydrogen, as a result of fast gravitational settling of heavier elements. These layers directly mediate thermal radiation from the stars, and determine the characteristics of X-ray/EUV spectra. For a neutron star with surface temperature T <∼ 10 K and magnetic field B >∼ 10 G, various forms of hydrogen can be present in th...
